Imagine you’re drowning. You didn’t create the ocean, and you can’t save yourself. A rescue boat arrives and throws you a life preserver. The captain calls out, “Trust me, and I’ll pull you in.”
At that moment, you have two choices. You can trust the rescuer and allow yourself to be pulled aboard, or you can refuse and remain in the water.
Getting into the boat isn’t something you accomplished. You didn’t swim yourself to safety. You didn’t earn your rescue. The captain did all the saving. Your part was simply to trust the one doing the rescuing.
In fact, if you insist on proving yourself by swimming harder or grabbing the propeller to “help,” you’ll only hinder your rescue.
If you reject the offer, you drown—not because the captain was unwilling or unable to save you, but because you refused the rescue freely offered.
The Gospel is much the same.
The Bible teaches that all of us have sinned against a holy God and cannot save ourselves through good deeds, religion, morality, or self-improvement.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
“Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight.” (Romans 3:20)
God became a man in Jesus Christ, lived the perfect life we could never live, died on the cross for our sins, and rose from the grave three days later, defeating sin and death.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
“Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures… and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)
Salvation is not a reward for good people. It is a gift of God’s grace received through faith in Christ.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith… not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” (Acts 16:31)
Jesus is the Rescuer. We don’t save ourselves; He saves us.
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1)
“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life.” (John 3:36)
Whoever places their trust in Christ is forgiven, justified before God, given eternal life, and adopted into God’s family.
The question is not, “Have I done enough?”
The question is, “Will I trust the One who already did?”
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” -Jesus (John 6:47)
